A Huge Day of Nintendo News: Nintendo Direct Recap

Today was Nintendo’s much anticipated Nintendo Direct. Amongst some of the expected announcements, like updates on Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Pokemon SwSh, we got hit with some surprise announcements as well. Like Banjo and Kazooie joining Smash Brothers later today! Check out the full video below, or keep reading to get the quick synopsis.

Banjo & Kazooie Join the Smash Roster!

Since I already spoiled the surprise, let’s start with that. Everybody’s favorite bear and bird will be available to download later today. Also revealed was the fourth fighter in the DLC pack. Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury will be next one to join. To top it all off, Smash Bros. will continue to get new characters past this first DLC pack. So don’t give up hope if you’re favorite character hasn’t made it in yet. Oh, and they’re bringing back Home-Run Contest, which is pretty huge.

Overwatch makes it to the Switch

Overwatch Legendary Edition will be available on Nintendo Switch as of October 15th. Not too many details released aside from that. It will be interesting to see if there’ll finally be any cross-platform play.

Luigi’s Mansion 3

A few new things were shown about Luigi’s Mansion 3. Amongst revealing some of the themes for the different floors of the hotel, they also revealed a new PvP game mode. In the new “ScreamPark” 2-8 players will compete by capturing ghosts, collecting coins, or breaking the most targets. The game will be released October 31, 2019. Yes, seriously. It’s spooooooky.

Little Town Hero

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything of Gamefreak’s new I.P. Little Town Hero. The hero, Axe, takes on monsters with nothing else but his “Ideas” whatever that means. During battle, Axe will strategically move around the town to gather assistance and gain the upper hand. The lack of details is odd, considering the game’s release date is October 16th of this year. It’ll be interesting to see where this RPG goes, but one things for sure, it’ll have an awesome soundtrack. All the music was composed by Undertale’s Toby Fox.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online

Starting tomorrow, Nintendo Switch Online members will have access to a library of SNES games. For free! Amongst the first 20 games, there’s Super Metroid, Star Fox, and F-Zero. The library will be continue to grow past the initial 20 releases coming tomorrow. There’s also going to be a classic SNES controller released for the Switch, also only available to those with an online membership.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Probably my favorite announcement for the whole Direct. Nintendo hit us with a ton of details for the newest Animal Crossing. Most importantly, the game finally got a release date too. Animal Crossing will pole-vault into our hearts on March 20, 2020. Yes, pole-vaulting over rivers is a thing now. I can’t wait to claim my Deserted Island Getaway Package, and crippling debt, from Tom Nook!

And So Much More

Since covering everything would be a fools errand, here’s an even quicker list of all the smaller announcements.

  • Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore: The Wii U’s, Shin Megami Tensei/Fire Emblem crossover is being brought to the Switch. Along with a few updates
  • Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition: Speaking of re-releases, the Original Xenoblade is also coming to the Switch.
  • Rogue Company: This 5 v 5 online shooter is a new I.P. from Hi-Rez Studios. Also unrelated to Star Wars.
  • Doom 64: As the name implies, this is a remake to Doom 64. The release date is November 22, 2019
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition: Yea, the game has been out everywhere else for years now. But in case you want to revisit it on the Switch, this version will have all DLC and Story expansions.
  • Super Kirby Clash: Available today and free to download. Take on boss battles as Kirby, alone or with up to 4 friends. The game will have over 100 quests available to start.
