Over the weekend at Pax West, Gearbox confirmed that Homeworld 3 is in the beginning stages of development. It has been a whopping 16 years since Homeworld 2 was released, meaning it’s going to take a lot to please fans after making them wait so long. Gearbox no doubt knows this. So they started a symbolic crowdfunding campaign over at fig.co with the goal set for 1 dollar. And yes, they already reached it. As of writing, they’ve already collected 596,660 USD with 23 days left in the campaign.
Why Does Gearbox Need Funding?
Simply put, they don’t. The entire point of the campaign is to give fans of the series a window into the development. Actually, more than a window. Backers will be given surveys and constant updates about the game. According to the campaign page:
“This is your chance to tell us what you expect of Homeworld 3, including its features, priorities, and even what the collector’s edition will include. We’ll share the data we’ve received from you throughout the game’s development and show how its influenced the scope and priorities of Homeworld 3.”

Honestly, it’s nice to see publishers and developers so interested in knowing what the fans want. Hopefully with everyone working together, Homeworld 3 will be one for the history books.
Backer Rewards
While having a part in the direction of the game is nice, having some extra rewards is even nicer. If you pledge 60 dollars, you’ll get a digital copy of Homeworld 3, one digital copy of the Remastered Collection, a digital copy of Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, access the backer-only Discord, and early access to Homeworld Mobile.
Getting a chance to play the previous games, as well as locking in Homeworld 3 is an excellent deal for only 60 dollars. If you’re interested at all, make sure to become a backer before the campaign ends.
